Young Choristers, Dance Practice, and Rain!

We are in the final two months!

This week in language, we read "Le pure des meilleurs amis" for our read aloud. While they didn't like some of the events in the story, we had some very interesting discussions about the behaviour of the characters, what makes a good friend, and how we can not like a book but still like parts of it.

We reviewed the "bl" sound in "Blaise. Our other shared reading was the poem "L'hirondelle et le poète". We focused quite a bit on using the punctuation to help with fluency, one of our strategies from last week.

This week we looked at the strategies of reading often and reading aloud to improve fluency.

In guided groups, some students are practising retells. Others are working on comprehension of informational text.

Many of the grade twos and threes are now independently reading easy chapter books in French. I love when they get to this point in their second language!

In math, we have been finishing up our unit on multiplication and division. Next week we will be starting a short unit on 3-dimensional figures.

The grade threes spent some time working with M. Choquette and his grade threes as they will be doing EQAO with him at the end of the month. They are doing some practise tests, to review all the strands and to get used to having a different teacher for the testing. After this week's tests, grade threes from both classes came to work with me to correct any mistakes and review different concepts. I also spent some time teaching the grade threes how to use a number line instead of a clock to calculate elapsed time.

This week the grade twos encountered a new concept in their daily problems: area and perimeter. We will be doing a unit on this in a few weeks but in the meantime, I did a short mini-lesson on the concepts, comparing them to being a gardener. Area is the space the garden takes up and perimeter is the amount of fencing needed to go around the garden. We will look at this in more detail when we get to that unit.

We have been practising the dances for this year's Celebration of Dance. Due to all the rain we have been getting and will continue to get this weekend, Celebration of Dance has been moved from Monday to the rain date of Wednesday. Hopefully the field at Fairfield P.S. will be dry by then.

On Tuesday, we went to watch the performance by the Young Choristers. I was very proud of how well the class behaved as audience members during the performance.

I have noticed lately that forms, information items, rubrics are still sitting in student pochettes after a few days. May and June are the busiest months of the school year, with lots going on. Please check agendas and pochettes daily.

Despite all the rain, have a great weekend!
